Meet Fromm Family Dog Food.
Fromm is a fifth-generation family owned and operated pet food company based in Wisconsin. Since the company’s founding in 1904, Fromm has garnered a reputation for innovation in the world of animal health and nutrition. Their “tradition of quiet innovation” involves developing the first canine distemper vaccine in the 1930s, pioneering the use of mixed tocopherols as natural preservatives, and inventing the first all-granular dog food.
This well-established brand offers a variety of recipes to suit specific health needs, life stages, and breed sizes. Whether you share your home with an overweight chihuahua or are seeking the right food for your rapidly-growing Rottweiler puppy, Fromm offers a formula that will likely get your dog’s tail wagging.
Before we learn about what sets this dog food apart, let’s get to know the company that stands behind it.
Behind the Brand
In 1904, the four Fromm brothers began what was then called simply “The Company”. While sitting on the porch of their family’s Wisconsin home, the boys conceived a vision for what would someday evolve into the Fromm company we know today. The company’s original mission was twofold: firstly, to produce the most beautiful silver foxes in the world, and secondly, to cultivate and harvest the best ginseng known to the Far East. Over the years, this childhood vision slowly developed and gained momentum. By 1916, the boys were finally able to purchase their first foxes, and by 1920, they were at last prepared to do business.
In 1920, the brothers sent only 10 pelts to auction. By 1925, they were able to send over 3,700. As their business grew, so did the threat of disease and the severity of its impact on their foxes. At the time, it was virtually impossible to prevent disease from decimating large populations of animals. This frustration demanded innovation.
In 1924, the brothers collaborated with Dr. Robert Green, a scientist at the University of Minnesota, to form Fromm Laboratories in Grafton, Wisconsin. In 1939, Fromm Laboratories, Inc. successfully created and began marketing the first fox encephalitis vaccine, as well as the first fox distemper vaccine, canine distemper vaccine, and feline distemper vaccine.
The company’s introduction to food production occurred in 1925, when the company built a food manufacturing plant in Mequon, Wisconsin. This plant is still in operation today, serving as the company’s home base and primary research and development facility.
In 1949, the first bag of Fromm Complete Dog Meal was sold, beginning Fromm’s legacy as a consumer pet food brand.
Today, Fromm products are still produced exclusively in the company’s US facilities. Each of these facilities implement HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) programs to ensure that only safe, high-quality products leave the plant. Additionally, their facilities are subject to regular inspection by the FDA, USDA, and APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service).
None of their ingredients are sourced from China, and all suppliers must pass the requirements established in Fromm’s Approved Supplier Program. This program ensures that all ingredients have been tested by suppliers before arriving at Fromm’s facilities.
Finally, all Fromm dog diets are AAFCO certified as nutritionally complete and balanced.
What types of dog food does Fromm offer?
Fromm offers three lines of dog food and a collection of paté recipes.
Among these three lines, you’ll find a wide array of formulas for puppies, adults, and seniors, as well as food designed for different dog sizes and weight goals.
Fromm dog foods are available in grain-inclusive and grain-free varieties. All Fromm dog foods are free from artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives and are made from high-quality, human grade meats – never byproducts.
Fromm kibble contains considerable quantities of plant matter and a moderate amount of meat. Avoid Fromm dry dog foods if you’re concerned about serving your dog a high-glycemic food or want to keep all plant-based foods out of your dog’s bowl. Whether dogs are carnivores or omnivores is an ongoing debate, but it’s clear that our dogs’ physical structure indicates a bias towards carnivorousness.
This line focuses on offering variety – Fromm calls it a “variety driven gourmet dining experience for your dog”. Featuring 23 different products to choose from, this line lives up to that promise. Each formula has been designed to allow you to feed your dog a different food for each meal. Every recipe in this line offers complete nutrition for all life stages, meaning that you can feed your dog any Fromm’s Four-Star recipe from puppyhood through old age.

In March of 2016, Fromm voluntarily recalled all lots of three of their canned dog food recipes. The recall was due to concerns about elevated levels of Vitamin D in these foods. While there were no reported health effects associated with this issue, Fromm’s own analysis indicated that these foods may not have contained the recommended levels of vitamins and minerals.
Where to Buy
For generations, Fromm has sold exclusively through neighborhood pet specialty retailers.
Tom Nieman, the company owner, explains: “To this day we only make our products available at independent pet retailers across North America and the world. There’s a passion and intimacy that comes across with small businesses that best conveys the true grassroots quality of family owned American made products.”
You can purchase Fromm foods through these independent retailers both online and in brick-and-mortar stores throughout the United States and around the world.
Fromm has a generally good reputation with customers. In order to feel the pulse of the people who purchase and feed their dogs these products, let’s take a look at what customers have to say about their Gold food.
On Amazon, 5 star reviews make up 85% of over 300 ratings.
What do people like and dislike about Fromm dog food?
Fans of the food remark that it’s kept their dogs muscular and has helped to keep their skin and coat healthy. A number of critical customer reviews talk about the kibble size, which may be too small for larger dogs.
“Excellent Quality dog food. We were a blue buffalo household before this and while we thought blue buffalo was a quality product this is on another level. My dog basically inhales his food now! You can tell the quality of the product by the look and the smell the second you open the bag. And I’ve noticed improvements in my dogs health from the shine of his fur to clean poops he takes. (gross but a dogs poop is great indicator of their health!)” – Amazon Customer
“I have been feeding this to my Shih Tzu puppies for the first time. They are doing extremely well on it and also seem to really like the taste of the food. Their coats are bright and shiny and they’ve all got good weight on them and tons of energy. I feel good about feeding an all natural food to my dogs and puppies and Fromm has been around for a long time for a reason. Plus, it’s not one of the highest-priced holistic foods on the market and that’s a plus also. I’m sending every one of my puppies home to their new families with a 5-pound bag of this food and hopefully they will continue to use it. Julie King, T-Amore Shih Tzu” – Julie Jo King
“This came recommended from an out of state friend. The ingredients seemed healthy enough and I wanted to like it. But it gave my dog chronic diarrhea. I even stopped it for a few weeks and let the stool return to normal, but when she restarted it, the diarrhea started again.
Also, my 90lb labrador was able to swallow this stuff without even chewing because it is pea-sized. Too small for big dogs.” – Nikon Nut
“Like all dog food, it will work great for one dog and not so much for the next. I appreciate the quality that comes with Fromm products. No recalls that I know of, etc. Unfortunately, I am just about done with my first bag and it gives one of my dogs tons of gas and the other started to butt scoot (a sign of anal gland problems). So, it is not working for us. I am bummed, I wanted to love it because I trust Fromm products. Oh well.” – seri
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
First 5 Ingredients: Duck, Chicken Meal, Chicken, Brown Rice, Pearled Barley, Oatmeal
This recipe was formulated with moderately active adult dogs in mind.
Unlike some other foods in the natural and premium space, Fromm Adult Gold isn’t a remarkably high-protein food, containing about 20% protein. Compare this to other foods marketed as biologically appropriate and inspired by your dog’s natural meat-eating nature, which might contain over 35% protein.
You’ll find a number of ingredients in this formula which deliver only modest nutritional value for your dog. In particular, the recipe includes brown rice and pearled barley. Aside from energy value, these two ingredients offer minimal nutritional content.
Other controversial ingredients include tomato pomace, a byproduct of tomato processing, dried brewers yeast, which is a byproduct of beer production, and alfalfa meal, which is high in plant protein – less biologically available than the protein found in meat.
Each of these ingredients, however, has its redeeming qualities. Tomato pomace contains fiber that aids digestion, while also offering bioflavonoids, which may help to fight free radicals. Brewers yeast is rich in B vitamins, along with minerals and amino acids. Alfalfa meal is a great source of fiber that’s rich in calcium, vitamins, and carotene.
Overall, considering that these ingredients aren’t the first ones on the list and offer real nutritional value, they’re valid inclusions in Fromm’s Adult Gold food.
This recipe rounds out the nutritional offering with probiotics to support digestive and immune health, along with Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that help keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy.
What you won’t find in this food are artificial ingredients, including dangerous preservatives, colors, and flavors. While this food does contain grains, it’s free of corn – one of the most common allergens affecting dogs. You also won’t find sketchy meat ingredients like “meat”, “poultry”, and “animal meals”. All of the meat is human-grade and clearly named.
Ultimately, you’re looking at a plant-based food featuring human-grade, high-quality meat along with multiple nutritionally-rich vegetables, grains, and added vitamins and minerals.
Fromm Adult Gold is available in three bag sizes: 5 lb, 15 lb, and 33 lb.
