Eagle Pack Dog Food : Brand Review 2023

Let’s learn more about Eagle Pack dog food.

Eagle Pack offers dry and canned foods for dogs and cats. All of these formulas are continually researched and field-tested with vets and trainers. According to the company, these formulas are designed to support the complex nutritional demands of all dogs, including athletes and working dogs.

Eagle Pack Pet Foods is currently a subsidiary of WellPet, LLC – a company formed from the combination of Wellness Natural Pet Food, Holistic Select Natural Pet Food, Old Mother Hubbard Natural Dog Snacks, and of course, Eagle Pack Natural Pet Food.

The company behind Eagle Pack had its start in 1970, when it was founded by Joe Cocquyt. At the time, the company manufactured and sold Hy-Ration foods. Hy-Ration offered low protein, low fat diets and was the first complete line of soy-free, calorie-controlled extruded pet foods.

After eight years of development with the help of veterinarians and trainers, Eagle Pack foods hit the market in 1985. These foods were designed to meet the nutritional demands of athletic canines. Since then, Eagle Pack’s field-tested foods have established a legacy of fueling some of the most high-performance canine athletes in the world. In 2011, Eagle Pack served as the Official Dog Food of the 2011 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

WellPet is based out of Tewksbury, Massachusetts. Eagle Pack pet foods are manufactured in a company-owned facility in Mishawaka, Indiana.

What types of food does Eagle Pack offer?

Eagle Pack offers a variety of dog foods in both dry and moist formulas. Dogs may have different nutritional needs according to life stage and breed size. Eagle Pack foods address these unique needs with their selection of diets for puppies, large and giant breeds like akitas and mastiffs, and small breeds like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Overall, these foods contain high-quality ingredients. Each formula is made without any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Instead of cheap byproducts, Eagle Pack uses only real meat and meat meals.

While you won’t find corn, soy, or wheat in any Eagle Pack dog food formula, the brand’s dry kibble is not grain-free. Instead of the aforementioned cheap fillers, Eagle Pack dry foods contain oatmeal, rice, and barley.

With over 40% carbohydrate content, Eagle Pack dry formulas are ultimately high-carbohydrate foods.

While Eagle Pack canned foods are low-carb with about 18% carbohydrate content, these moist foods also contain grains.

If you’re interested in providing a low-glycemic diet for your dog or are seeking a grain-free food, Eagle Pack’s grain-inclusive, plant-heavy formulations may be a concern. Whether dogs are carnivores or omnivores is still up for debate, their physical structure strongly suggests a bias towards carnivorousness.

Here’s Eagle Pack’s current recipe lineup:

Recall History

Since the brand was created in 1985, Eagle Pack has not been affected by any recalls.

The company implements strict regulatory procedures that affect manufacturing at every stage of production. The company goes beyond the standard requirements for pet food production by requiring that all suppliers implement HAACP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) in addition to self-evaluation and a human food quality audit. Once the ingredients reach Eagle Pack’s manufacturing facilities, quality systems programs, food safety programs, and success measurement guidelines ensure safety and quality every step of the way.

Customer Reviews

Eagle Pack dog food reviews are overwhelmingly positive. After browsing through the hundreds of reviews of this food, certain trends become apparent. Happy customers talk about the moderate price of the food and quality of the ingredients. A number of people have seen improvement in their dogs’ overall health.

The negative reviews tend to focus on their dogs’ reactions to the food. Some dogs seem not to like the food’s flavor, while others experienced diarrhea or other stomach upset after switching to Eagle Pack.

Here are a handful of real customer reviews:

“If the price stays the same, I will order this again and again for my pups. One (3 yrs old) and one (8 months old). I am picky about feeding them healthy food. Usually I have had to purchase different foods for their ages. And it never fails that one doesn’t like their food and wants the other’s. Both love this food! I also love the size of the kibble and that there are no visible color additives…..Overall, I love that it is good for them and affordable!” – I HEART SHOPPING ONLINE

“I have been a dog owner for 35 years and Eagle Pack is undoubtedly the best dog food I’ve ever found.

My first Basset Hound, Stretch, was suffering from arthritis when he was just 9 years old. The vet said that was normal and that Bassets only live to be 9 – 11 y/o often because the arthritis in their hips gets them down and they just sort of give up. Stretch was my baby, so I was extremely upset to think that I might lose him. I went into a local feed store and the owner told me about Eagle Pack Senior. I started him on it that day and within 30 days, Stretch was hopping around like a puppy. That was in 1999. Stretch lived to be nearly 14 y/o and I honestly credit Eagle Pack for much of that.

I continue to feed my dogs and cats Eagle Pack. Currently my oldest dog (Bassett Hound – German Shepard mix) will be 15 y/o on July 4th. Our vets are impressed with how healthy our cats and dogs are. I believe what you feed them has tremendous impact on their overall health and appearance. I’ve never had a fat animal. Eagle Pack helps them to maintain a healthy weight.

Prior to 1999, I fed my dogs a grocery store brand and it went right through them. It might have filled them up hunger wise, but they didn’t get much nutrition and pooped out most of it. Probably because there was not enough protein content. This is not the case with EP.

I recently came across an article rating dry dog food and yes, Eagle Pack was on the list. And it’s American made!” – Trish

“Every so often, I like to try different foods for my dog (3.5 year old boxer x German shorthair), just for kicks to see if he does better on something other than what I’ve found. He did OK on this food, but his stools were softer than I would like, and his coat lost a noticeable amount of shine. His energy level was great, the same as on his previous diet. That’s not to say this isn’t a good diet, just not the best for my dog.” – fedx8

“My puppy lost so much weight and had diarreah like crazy. She only ate it when she was starving. I lasted all of two weeks before I had to take her to vet to make sure it wasn’t an illness. Since then I switch to another brand and her poop is great. As is her weight gain. $30 some odd dollars and a $125 vet bill later….” – Kindle Customer

Eagle Pack Original Adult Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Formula Review

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

First 5 Ingredients: Lamb Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Brown Rice, Dehulled Barley, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols)

Eagle Pack’s popular Lamb Meal & Brown Rice formula is a plant-based dog food featuring a combination of grains, multiple animal proteins, nutraceuticals, and added vitamins and minerals. It’s designated for adult maintenance, meaning that it’s not necessarily appropriate for all life stages or dogs with special nutritional needs.

Like all Eagle Pack foods, this formula is free of corn, soy, and wheat. It doesn’t contain any artificial, flavors, or preservatives and uses named meats rather than low-quality byproducts.

This food features lamb meal as the first ingredient. Meat meals are highly concentrated meat products. Lamb meal contains far more protein per ounce than fresh lamb would.

Moving down the list, we see three grains: oatmeal, ground brown rice, and dehulled barley. Oatmeal is a nutritious choice, rich in B vitamins, dietary fiber, and iron. Rice is a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour, but doesn’t offer much in terms of nutrition. Similarly, barley contributes to the fiber content of the food, but isn’t a nourishing ingredient for your dog.

The last of our first five ingredients is chicken fat. This ingredient is rich in beneficial linoleic acid and contributes to the overall nutritional value of the food.

Later in the ingredient list, we find more nourishing meat ingredients. The recipe incorporates chicken meal along with anchovy and sardine meal.

You’ll also spot a couple of controversial items: tomato pomace and brewers yeast. Both of these ingredients are byproducts of tomato processing and beer production, respectively, and some view them as low-quality ingredients. That said, both of these ingredients deliver valuable nutrition: tomato pomace is rich in fiber and lycopene, while brewers yeast is mineral-rich and may offer immune support.

This food is rich in probiotics as well as natural vitamins and minerals. It contains glucosamine for joint health, along with Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that promote a healthy skin and coat.

Compared to many other foods sold under the premium and natural label, Eagle Pack is relatively low-cost. You can purchase a 30lb bag of Lamb & Brown Rice Adult dog food for around $40.

This food is available in three bag sizes: 6lb, 15lb, and 30lb.
