This dog breed originated in the Caucasus Mountain region where they were used to guard villages and flocks. The Caucasian Ovcharka was also used by the former Soviet government to guard factories and government facilities. In the United States, they have earned a reputation as trustworthy service dogs. This breed is also known as the Caucasian Mountain Dog.

Caucasian Ovcharka Characteristics

This dog breed is muscular, powerful and athletic. The breed has an extremely distinctive head and expression. This dog breed is often described as “bear-like”. The Caucasian Ovcharka is massive with the body being only slightly longer than their height.

Caucasian Ovcharka Temperament

This dog breed is affectionate and gentle with family members. They are highly protective of their family and territory and extremely wary of strangers and other dogs. This breed is even-tempered, steady, stable and alert. The Caucasian Mountain Dog has keen senses and will growl and bark at any perceived danger. When threatened they respond with lightening-quick speed to protect their family and territory.

Caucasian Ovcharka Care

This dog breed requires frequent brushing to prevent the coat from tangling and matting. They should only be bathed with a mild shampoo when absolutely necessary to preserve the natural oils of the skin and coat. There are no known health problems associated with the breed.

Caucasian Ovcharka Coat

This dog breed has a weather-resistant double coat. The outer coat of the Caucasian Mountain Dog has harsh and long guard hairs. The undercoat is soft, fine and thick. This dog breed can have three types of coats: long, medium and short.

They are slow to mature and are headstrong. Early socialization is essential. They do not respond well to rough, forceful or heavy-handed training methods. Training should be performed with firmness, fairness, patience and reward.

This dog breed is completely unsuitable for apartment or city dwelling. The Caucasian Ovcharka is best suited to a rural setting where there is room to roam and run and a job to do.
