Catahoula Leopard Dog Overview
This dog breed is believed to have descended from “war dogs” like the Mastiff and Greyhound. The Catahoula Leopard is considered to be the ultimate working dog and probably the most versatile. This dog breed excels at cattle herding and wild game hunting, including squirrel, deer, bear, raccoon and wild boar. Catahoula Leopards have the distinction of being the State dog of Louisiana since 1979.
Catahoula Leopard Dog Characteristics
This dog breed is athletic, territorial and agile. The Catahoula Leopard Dog has extreme energy and enthusiasm. This breed is medium to large in size and very muscular. The unique characteristic of the Catahoula Leopard Dog is prominent webbing of the paws that allow them to work in marshy areas makes them great swimmers.
Catahoula Leopard Dog Temperament
This dog breed is not recommended for novice or first time dog owners. The Catahoula Leopard Dog does not get along well with other dogs or household pets. They also not recommended for homes with young children. The Catahoula Leopard breed is highly protective of their family and territory and is aggressive toward strangers. This dog breed is extremely affectionate and playful towards their owners and in the right environment makes a delightful companion and guard dog.
Catahoula Leopard Dog Care
This dog breed requires minimal grooming. An occasional brush suffices for the Catahoula Leopard Dog. To preserve the natural oils of the skin and coat, this breed should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. It is important to the ears and paws regularly for debris. The Catahoula Leopard is generally a healthy breed, but dogs with primarily white coats are estimated to have an 80% chance of being deaf in one or both ears, and are also prone to blindness. Other recorded health problems include hip dysplasia, abnormal pupils and tunnel arevision.
