Bluetick Coonhound Overview
Originating in Louisiana, the ancestry of the Bluetick Coonhound can be traced back to the Bleu Gascogne French hounds. This dog breed is a born hunter. They are excellent at tracking and treeing raccoon, opossum, bear and cougar, in any weather and terrain. One of the most notable features of the breed is their cold nose that gives them the ability to track very old scents.
Bluetick Coonhound Characteristics
This dog breed is large, muscular and extremely powerful. The breed combines agility and tremendous endurance, with self-confidence. This breed is intelligent and has a highly developed sense of smell. The breed has exceptional eyesight enabling them to hunt proficiently at night.
Bluetick Coonhound Temperament
As a loyal, devoted, attentive and fearless breed, the Bluetick Coonhounds make an excellent family companion and guard dog. They do best in a home older, considerate children. The they tend to be cautious of strangers, but is typically not aggressive. This breed gets along well with the dogs they were raised with, but are generally not suited to homes with cats or small household pets. This dog will most generally howl excessively and be destructive if bored or left alone for an extended period.
Bluetick Coonhound Care
This dog breed requires weekly brushing to minimize loose or head hair. Bluetick Coonhounds should only be bathed when absolutely necessary to preserve the natural oils of the coat. The ears should bechecked and cleaned on a regular and consistent basis to prevent infection. The Bluetick Coonhound is a relatively healthy breed, but may be prone to cataracts, hip dysplasia, and Krabbes disease.
Bluetick Coonhound Coat
This dog breed has a thick, short, smooth and shiny coat that is coarse to the touch. The tri-color coat of the Bluetick Coonhound is quite unique. The base color is white with a heavy ticking of black hair, which gives it a speckled blue effect. There are tan markings over the eyes, chest, muzzle, lower legs and feet. The breed is a continuous shedder.
Bluetick Coonhound Training
Early socialization and obedience training are an absolute must for this dog. This breed does not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed training methods. Training should be performed with motivation, patience, firmness, fairness and consistency. The Bluetick Coonhounds excel at hunting, agility and tracking.
Bluetick Coonhound Activity
This dog breed requires daily, vigorous exercise. The Bluetick Coonhounds thrive on human interaction and having a job to do. This breed is not recommended for apartment or city dwelling. They do best in a rural setting where there is room to romp and roam freely or in a large, securely fenced yard.
