Greyhound dogs are an ancient breed that has kept us fascinated and impressed for thousands of years. These sleek dogs, with their “S” shaped, aerodynamic bodies are the fastest dog breed, reaching speeds over 40 miles per hour.

They’re commonly known for hunting, racing, and being loyal family companions. If you’re a greyhound owner, there are some things you’ll need to know to provide the proper care. For your Greyhound to be healthy and live to old age, he has to get the right food, and the correct amount, from the time he is a puppy.

Greyhounds can be open to different medical conditions if their growth is not carefully monitored and controlled. This step starts with the dog food you offer. Greyhounds require higher protein and healthy fats.

As Greyhounds age, they become more prone to conditions that make them gain too much weight. If she becomes obese, it can open the door for a world of problems. You might have to switch their food to ensure they’re getting the proper nutrition for their new needs, such as bone and joint support or taurine for their heart. You could also have to alter the amount they eat.

What to Look for in a Good Dog Food?

  • Higher protein
  • Taurine, chondroitin, glucosamine
  • No cheap fillers or common pet allergens

Greyhounds have special dietary needs so you can’t just give them a basic dog food straight off the supermarket shelf. They need higher protein because they are active pets that have a lot of energy.

They also need balanced calories, so they don’t have rapid growth spurts or weight problems. Greyhounds need at least 1750 calories a day for a 70-pound dog. Look for limited ingredient formulas and always pick a recipe that lists animal-based protein as the first ingredient.

Fat is also essential to Greyhounds. But you need to make sure these fats come from whole sources; animal fats are commonly used. High meat and raw meat diets have been recommended for this breed.

Ingredients to Avoid

  • Meat by-products
  • Corn
  • Dairy
  • Soy
  • Salt
  • Sugar

Greyhounds can have food allergies, so it’s better not to have cheap ingredients included in their food. These include corn and soy, which are the most common allergens for dogs. These bad calories can make your pet feel fuller, so they don’t eat as much, but it also can make them itchy and gain weight.

Meat-byproducts are the renderings of meat leftover after processing. You often find these listed in ingredient lists for cheaper dog foods. Premium dog foods that are safe for Greyhounds avoid these unhealthy sources of protein. These are also empty calories that can cause unhealthy weight gain.

How Much to Feed Greyhounds

Puppy Diet & Feeding Chart

Greyhounds require strict supervision while they’re growing into adult dogs. For this reason, it’s crucial to get the assistance of your veterinarian to determine the appropriate feeding schedule. Each pet will differ in their dietary needs, so it’s challenging to provide a feeding routine for puppies.

Adult Diet & Feeding Chart

Weight of Dog (in pounds – lbs) Amount daily
Less than 60 3 cups daily
More than 60 4 cups daily

Greyhounds are considered to reach adult age between twelve months and three years of age. Females usually weigh less than 60 pounds. Males typically weigh more, but most Greyhounds won’t exceed 100 pounds. It is advised to let your pet get to this weight as it could be harmful to their health.

This breed of dog has a sleek body shape, so it needs the proper diet to maintain muscle mass and a healthy weight. Always provide a constant supply of fresh water for your pet and look into getting a raised serving platform, so your pet doesn’t have to eat from floor level. This will reduce the chance of bloat, a severe medical condition.

Senior Diet & Feeding Chart

For most senior dogs, you can continue to use the same feeding schedule that they’ve always had. There might be instances where your vet might recommend switching to a food that has crucial nutrients for senior dogs. Or that you reduce the amount of food they eat a day to control weight gain.

Many senior dogs become prone to obesity and joint problems from reduced activity levels. In these cases, you might need to switch to dog food that has fewer calories or carbohydrates. You might also have to offer more meals throughout the day, in reduced portions to help with food intolerances.

Common Health Problems for Greyhounds

Health Problem 1 – Bloat

Large, barrel-chested dogs like the Greyhound are frequently prone to a condition called bloat. This issue causes the dog’s stomach to twist on itself and can lead to death if not immediately fixed. There are ways to reduce the chances of your pet getting bloat.

Experts recommend keeping your pet’s food off the ground, so they don’t have to lean down so far to eat. Doing so allows them to inhale a lot of air, which can fill the stomach. Providing dense nutrition also helps, as it lets them feel full without eating as much.

You should also divide your pooch’s daily food allotment into multiple meals. One half of the daily serving in the morning and the equivalent at night is usually acceptable. Although you could divide it into a morning, midday, and afternoon schedule too. Never walk your pet 30 minutes before or after they eat.

Health Problem 2 – Musculoskeletal issues

Due to the size and activity level of greyhounds, most suffer from some type of bone or joint problems later in life. They’re also commonly susceptible to osteoarthritis. Pets who are retired racers are more likely to have these issues.

They’re also frequently diagnosed with osteosarcoma, or bone cancer. This illness requires aggressive treatment and usually requires amputation of the infected leg, as well as chemotherapy. If not caught in time, this type of cancer can be fatal.

Look for supplements added to your pet’s food like glucosamine and chondroitin, which promote healthy bone and joint development. Calcium supplementation helps strengthen bones and teeth. And protein will help build muscle, which reduces strain to joints.

Health Problem 3 – Heart issues

Many Greyhounds have minor heart murmurs. This is due to the size of their heart, which also causes them to experience high blood pressure often as well. Typically, this condition is minor and is nothing to be concerned about; however, they should still be monitored.

If your pet is diagnosed with heart disease by a veterinarian, ask questions to be sure they are familiar with Greyhounds’ history of heart murmurs. It might be wise to get a second opinion if the veterinarian doesn’t provide enough reasonable proof that your pet has the disease.

A Word About Canine DCM

DCM is short for dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that affects the heart. With DCM, the heart muscles deteriorate and stop working correctly. The heart starts to have trouble pumping blood and can lead to congestive heart failure.

It’s not clear what causes this condition, although it is frequently found in large and giant breed dogs in the middle to senior age. It can be genetic, as well as being caused by nutrition. The Food and Drug Administration has issued concerns that this condition can be caused by certain types of ingredients in grain-free dog foods, although nothing has been thoroughly proven.

Symptoms of DCM include:

  • Exercise intolerance
  • Coughing
  • Potbelly
  • Cold feed
  • Decreased appetite
  • Difficulty breathing

How often should I feed my breed? What’s the correct schedule?

When it comes to feeding your Greyhound, there are a few things to remember. Greyhounds will bond with the person who is feeding them more than they will anyone else. It’s wise to let the whole family take turns with responsibility. Always use adult supervision when children are doing the feeding.

Greyhounds need to be isolated during their mealtimes, so be sure you put them somewhere they can be alone and undisturbed. For thirty minutes before and thirty minutes after mealtime, your pet should have limited physical activity, so they have time to digest their food thoroughly.

Greyhounds do best when you stick to a strict feeding schedule. To reduce digestive problems, feed your pet multiple meals throughout the day, with smaller portions equalling up to their daily needs, which is usually three to four cups depending on weight.

Is grain-free dog food bad for Greyhounds?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expressed concerns about grain-free dog foods being linked to multiple cases of dogs and cats which contracted DCM – dilated cardiomyopathy. Many grain-free products contain ingredients in place of grain, which might be the cause of this health condition.

Possible cautionary ingredients that you should consider before using include peas, lentils, legume seeds, and potatoes. The protein, starch, and fiber derivatives of these ingredients are also included. Before feeding your Greyhound a grain-free dog food, you should get the advice of your veterinarian.

How do I transition my Greyhound from one food to another?

When switching your Greyhound from one type of food to another, you should always do so gradually. Making an abrupt change can cause your pet to experience digestive distress, such as diarrhea or vomiting.

You should transition your pet to the new food over seven days by mixing new and old foods. Each day, you gradually reduce the amount of old dog food, replacing it with more of the new type. By the seventh day, your pet should be entirely on the new diet and not experiencing any problems, although it may take a week or two to get fully adjusted.

  • Day 1 and 2 – 25% new food 75% old food
  • Day 3 and 4 – 50% new food 50% old food
  • Day 5 and 6 – 75% new food 25% old food
  • Day 7 – 100% new food 0% old food

Greyhounds require a lot of supervision during their growing years, so they don’t have rapid growth spurts. They also have to have a balanced diet and lots of exercise to maintain healthy muscle tone and body shape. Failure to give your Greyhound adequate room to run can cause bone problems. If you’re the pet parent of a Greyhound, be sure you’re providing all the proper care so they can have a happy lifespan of up to 14 years.
